What do PET bottle cap colours mean?
What can a cap colour tell you?
Cap colour is part of a brand’s packaging design. It can help customers recognise a range or distinguish products within the same brand. Different manufacturers may use the same colour for different reasons, so one brand’s colour scheme should not be applied to every water or beverage brand.
Read the product label and the manufacturer’s information to identify the beverage, its ingredients and storage instructions. A blue, white, green or black cap alone does not establish the water’s mineral content, source or quality.
Is a PET bottle cap also made of PET?
“PET bottle cap” may describe the bottle that the cap is intended to fit. It does not establish that the cap itself is made of PET. Depending on the design, caps can use materials such as polyethylene or polypropylene. Check the material specified in the relevant cap’s technical sheet.
How should a production colour be specified?
Start with a reference sample or a defined colour target. A photograph on a screen is affected by lighting, camera settings and display settings. Before approving series production, assess a physical cap sample together with the intended bottle and label.
Include the approved sample, assessment conditions and acceptance criteria in the order specification. A colour change should be considered together with the cap material, colourant and intended conditions of use.
Technical fit comes before colour
A cap that looks right may not fit the bottle correctly. Neck dimensions and geometry, thread design, sealing system and filling-line compatibility need separate checks. Test samples with the final bottle and filled product.
