Are foil seals, tamper evidence and child resistance the same?

Each feature addresses a different requirement

Sealing, evidence of first opening, reclosure and resistance to access by children are separate packaging requirements. One component may serve several functions, but one feature does not automatically establish another. Selection should not end with a word such as safety or locking in the product name.

A tear-off membrane or larger tear-off feature changes during opening and may provide visible evidence of first use. It should not be assumed to prevent every form of interference, guarantee safe contents or provide child resistance.

Foil and closure attachment

When assessing an aluminium or laminated-foil closure, establish the foil’s intended function and application method. Not every foil has the same construction or processing requirements. Consider the bottle opening, closure and any application equipment together with product-specific documentation.

Flip-top describes an opening action separate from screw or snap-on attachment. A foil-lined flip-top description does not establish neck compatibility. A snap-on glass-bottle cap with a tear-off feature also requires the actual glass neck drawing and seating geometry. A closure selected for PET should not automatically be transferred to glass.

Push-and-turn and syrup closures

Push-and-turn is an opening action used in particular designs. A 28 mm size or locking description alone does not establish verified child resistance. If required, request appropriate information for the specific closure and packaging arrangement.

A syrup closure should not be selected by capacity or colour alone. Dispensing, any measuring component, reclosure and user instructions depend on the application. A general closure description is not pharmaceutical-packaging approval.

Write down the requirements

List the functions separately in the enquiry: sealing, first-opening evidence, repeated use or a particular opening action. Provide the bottle drawing, filled product and conditions. Define acceptance criteria around the product and intended user.

Assess attachment, first opening, subsequent closing and filling-line behaviour together. A design change that alters instructions should not be treated as a minor visual variation. Confirm a special function before presenting it as a general supply promise.
