Plastic bottle types: assessing PET, PE and PS

What does the material name tell you?

PET means polyethylene terephthalate, PE means polyethylene, and PS means polystyrene. These names identify material families. An abbreviation alone cannot establish how a bottle should be used: assess the particular material, bottle design, filled product and conditions together.

A PET bottle does not necessarily have a PET cap. The closure may use a different polymer. Read the bottle and closure records separately, then confirm mechanical and application compatibility as a system. A material name does not establish universal chemical resistance or food-contact suitability.

Transparent, coloured and different-sized bottles

Transparency or a blue colour is not a reliable material identification method. Request current specifications from the supplier. Consider product visibility, branding and application requirements when choosing a coloured bottle; do not assume that colour guarantees a particular protective performance.

A 100 ml or 250 ml PE bottle can differ from a larger bottle in dimensions, neck design and use behaviour. Capacity describes how much product the container holds. It does not identify a suitable closure code or establish filling-line compatibility. Evaluate the bottle sample with the actual cap and filled product.

Describe conditions, not just application names

Descriptions such as detergent bottle, shampoo bottle or edible-oil bottle indicate an intended use. They do not prove that every detergent, cosmetic formulation or oil will work with the same packaging. Give the bottle manufacturer the product characteristics, filling temperature and storage conditions.

For pumps and trigger sprayers, also assess the neck specification and dip tube arrangement. The behaviour of the body matters when the bottle is intended to be squeezed. Describe the required application performance rather than relying only on PET or PE as a specification.

Recycling and sourcing

A material name does not guarantee recycling in every collection system. Consider local collection arrangements and all components of the package. A recycled-content claim also requires evidence for the particular product and scope.

This guide does not offer bottle supply. When requesting a Peksan closure or related-component assessment, provide the bottle drawing, physical sample and current specification. Reassess an earlier compatibility decision when the bottle material or geometry changes.
